University of Westminster

University of Westminster logo The mission of the University of Westminster is to provide high quality higher education and research in both national and international contexts for the intellectual, social and professional development of the individual and for the economic and cultural enrichment of London and wider communities.

It has a proud history, founded in 1838 as the Polytechnic Institution, Britain's first such educational institution. It has led the way in developing new technologies, opening the first ever photographic studio in Europe, and first showing moving pictures to a paying British public.

The University has superb locations in central London and in Harrow and has more than 22,000 students, of whom 75 per cent are undergraduates. Included in this total are more than 5,000 international students, from over 150 overseas nations, making Westminster one of the top 15 most popular UK universities for international students.

The University works in partnership with Aimhigher to provide a wide range of activities to engage and motivate students who have the potential to enter higher education but are under-achieving, undecided or lacking in confidence. Examples include:

  • Master classes and Subject Tasters
  • Ambassador programmes and training
  • Staff development
  • Mentoring
  • Debating challenge
  • University experience days
  • Specialist workshops
  • Progression days and workshops
