BTEC Practitioner Group Meeting

On the 9th of November Linking London held its first BTEC Practitioner Group Meeting of the 2015 - 16 academic year.

Attendees from HE and FE heard from David MacKay, Head of Awarding Body Stakeholder Engagement, Pearson, who provided an update on current BTEC developments, including Pearson’s engagement with HEIs. David explained that most existing BTEC National titles across sectors and sizes have now been redeveloped and reminded the group that the Regulated Qualifications Framework has now replaced the QCF. David also explored the implications for higher education of the changes.

Peter Chetwynd, Head of Undergraduate Admissions, King's College London followed with a KCL perspective on BTEC learner progression to HE. Peter highlighted the increasing number of applicants, offers and enrolments of BTEC learners at KCL. Peter explored challengers in relation to BTEC progression as well as possible next steps to improve progression and retention.

Andrew Jones then summarised Linking London’s work to support BTEC learners and staff in FE and HE and also shared data on BTEC learner progression into and through HE, drawing on Hugh Joslin’s and Sharon Smiths Progression of College Students in London to Higher Education 2007 to 2012 report, commissioned by Linking London.

The next BTEC meeting will take place in the spring term 2016, date to be confirmed.
