The Changing Qualifications Landscape Event

The world of qualifications in England is subject to on-going review and change. This event focussed on recent changes to qualifications, in particular at level 3 and the implications for learners as well as further and higher education institutions. Attendees also had an opportunity to find out more about recent apprenticeship developments, in particular higher and degree apprenticeships.

 

After an introduction from Sue Betts, Director of Linking London, Marisa Castellini, Curriculum Development Manager – Access to HE, OCN London, gave an update on Access to HE Diplomas. This included reflections on the new Access to HE specification one year on, learner numbers for 2015-16, the UCAS tariff from 2017 and QAA developments.

Delegates then heard from Tony Forster, Vocational Education and Curriculum Manager, City & Guilds who provided an overview of the 14-19 reforms as well as the UK employability challenge before focussing on the latest developments in relation to the City & Guilds TechBac qualification.

After a break for refreshments. David MacKay, Head of Awarding Body Stakeholder Engagement, Pearson, updated attendees on recent changes to BTEC & GCSE & A-level qualifications. This was followed by an update on Pearson BTEC Higher National developments from Jane Baker, Director of the Higher Nationals Unit, including the timelines for HN redesign.

Attendees then heard from Tony Forster on the recent reforms to apprenticeships, the trailblazer process, as well as changes to assessment and funding. Tony then provided an overview of higher and degree apprenticeship developments before concluding with a summary of City & Guilds plans which include the creation of a progression pathway for learners from levels 2-6.

A question and answer session followed which provided attendees with an opportunity to discuss these changes in more detail and explore the potential impact on learners and institutions.
