BTEC Practitioner Group Meeting
Linking London’s final BTEC Practitioner Group Meeting of the academic year was held on the 19th May 2016. After an introduction and welcome from Andrew Jones (Linking London Deputy Director and IAG specialist), the first presentation to the group was made by David Mackay (Pearson, Head of Awarding Body Stakeholder Engagement). David discussed the revision of the BTEC nationals, as well as the Pearson ‘I choose BTEC’ campaign.
Attendees then took part in a round table update where practitioners reported on matters such as top-up degree provision, internal progression, and targeted outreach.
After a short break, delegates heard from Kiran Rami (Uxbridge College) who provided a further education perspective on how to best support BTEC learner progression through IAG work. Kiran covered anecdotal criticism of the qualification, resources to raise aspirations, and collaboration between FECs and HEIs.
Andrew Jones then presented delegates with some initial mapping of 2017 entry requirements for BTEC learners using the new UCAS tariff and highlighted inconsistencies and/or problems in the application of the tariff on UCAS and institutional websites.
Andrew closed the meeting with a review of the past year’s work plan, and a discussion on the future direction of the BTEC Practitioner Group. The next meeting will be held in October.
