BTEC Practitioner Group Meeting
The first BTEC Practitioner Group Meeting of this academic year took place on 8 November and was well represented, with 20 FE and HE partners present.
The meeting began with a presentation from David MacKay who provided an update on the BTEC National qualification developments, including new courses for first teaching in September 2018 and 2019, and feedback from David’s travels around HEIs to inform them about the move from QCF to RQF.
Following this, a roundtable partner update took place where partners shared information on entry requirements and outreach offers, and college partners discussed the challenges and opportunities of offering the new and old BTEC specification this academic year, as well as shared information on supporting BTEC students transitioning to Higher Education and new developments.
After a short networking break, the group heard from Rebecca Mameli who provided an overview of the Pearson BTEC Higher Nationals. Rebecca led an interactive group session on the current barriers students face when choosing HNs as a progression route and how Pearson could help to further raise awareness of HNs as a potential pathway.
Andrew Jones then shared the latest draft Linking London HE Admissions Good Practice Guide for BTEC Applicants for comment.
The meeting closed with an interactive session on the potential for a pilot working with students on BTEC Firsts (level 2 qualifications). The group discussed the importance of this pilot and contributed their ideas to the structure and content.
The next BTEC meeting will take place on 28th February 2019, 2-5pm, at Birkbeck, University of London.
