Student Retention and Success Meeting

On 4th March, Linking London held the second Student Retention and Success Meeting of the academic year chaired by Michael Hill, Assistant Professor in Learning & Teaching at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.

After a warm welcome from Michael Hill, partners then introduced themselves to the group and gave a short update about their institution and its approach to improving the student experience.

Sally Rutter, Student Engagement Manager and Sakinah Drief, Student Engagement Officer (Insights) at King’s College London presented to the group on The King’s 100 programme firstly giving a background to the project including context and the inspiration behind it. Secondly, they also explained how they are running the project this year, how panel events are conducted, student feedback and future plans.

Following this we heard from Janira Borges, Student Outcomes Officer (Underrepresented groups) at King’s College London who presented to the group on the Inclusive Education Student Partners programme including causes of attainment gap, an overview of the programme and reflections.

After a short comfort break, we heard from two graduate mentors who spoke about their experiences working as mentors in 6th Form Colleges and a school. The topics covered included what benefits are in it for the mentees and mentors, challenges and benefits of online mentoring and what kind of support is given to the mentors. A full write up of the Q&A summary can be found on the Partner Area.

Following this, the group discussed and reflected on the three presentations and emerging themes such as working with students and the issue around engagement with faculty staff and selection. The group also discussed the idea of partners contributing to a compendium on effective practise to help pivot work that’s being done to help benefit students.

The next Student Retention and Success meeting will be in on the 17th June, 2-4pm. More information to follow.
