London NCOP-Linking London Update

October has been a very busy month for the NCOP team at Linking London. Firstly there have been a number of staff changes as we have said goodbye to Helen Robinson, our Programme Manager who has taken up a position in the Civil Service. Sarah Fisher will now be the Programme Coordinator and we are delighted to welcome Suzanne Humphreys who started with us on Monday as Engagement Officer at Havering 6th Form College and we are pleased confirm that Louise Izzard will start as Programme Officer at the start of November.

Alongside the work taking place in each of our hubs, Linking London alongside Access HE and AimHigher London are organising a London NCOP Careers Fair that will take place on 19th November at the QEII Centre in Westminster. This is an exciting collaborative event which will see over 400 students from ages 14-19 from London NCOP partner schools and colleges come together and as well as an exhibition space for employers and universities there will be a series of workshops available for students to attend.

In terms of our engagement with learners so far this academic year, over 50 interventions have already taken place. The majority of these have been in Havering Further Education College and Barking and Dagenham College in Hub 1 where 149 learners (32 of whom are ward learners) have benefited from our collaborative work so far this year. The programme offered to these learners is diverse. A significant proportion of the delivery is class-based and includes careers, options and UCAS workshops delivered by Linking London and partner HEI staff as well as attainment raising sessions focusing on enhancing a specific aspect of the college curriculum.

In addition to class-based work, learners have also benefited from several trips including to the UCAS Creative Your Future event at the Excel Centre in London and talks by inspirational speakers as part of the Future Fest Programme. Finally, our Young Creatives Programme in Hub 1 has continued to be a success with a fascinating talk from freelance photographer Kim Leuenberger on 15th October.

In Hub 2, in London South East Colleges (LSEC) initial one-to-one meetings with learners have started taking place and Jack Spear, NCOP engagement officer at LSEC is also working to coordinate delivery through hour HEI partners. In Coulsdon College, Tina Jones will now work 1 day a week on the NCOP. Tina works as a Careers Officer at the college already and so is well placed to engage target learners on the NCOP and has already started to have initial mapping sessions with learners.

We have continued to struggle to engage with South Thames Colleges Group who we had hoped to work together with through an innovative attainment raising project with St Mary’s University Twickenham but we are hopeful that this project can continue in one of our other partner colleges.

If you are interested in finding out more about Linking London’s NCOP and how you can get involved, please do get in touch with our Programme Coordinator, . Please do also keep up to date with our NCOP by looking at our NCOP tab on the Linking London website.
