Access to HE Diploma Practitioner Group Meeting
The first Access Practitioner Group Meeting of the Academic Year was held on the 31st October and was well attended, with over 20 partner representatives present. After a welcome from Andrew Jones, Deputy Director of Linking London, delegates received an update on Access to HE Development from Marisa Castellini, Head of Access to HE for OCN London. Marisa discussed the implications of the NHS Bursary removal, student numbers and GCSE retakes.
A roundtable partner update followed, where HE partners shared information on entry requirements and outreach offers, and College partners discussed the recruitment of Access learners for 2016/17 and HE progression. Topics raised included the rise in younger Access learners, and the ongoing issue of unconditional offers.
After a short break, Julien Boast, Progression Coordinator, and Sarah Tucker, Widening Participation Officer, both of SOAS, gave a presentation to attendees on supporting Access learners through the FE/HE transition period. SOAS’ updated Bridging Course and their mentoring scheme were highlighted.
Andrew Jones then presented delegates with Linking London updates on mapping work, resources and progression data, and closed the meeting with a the discussion topic: ‘Access to HE Diplomas and Degree Apprenticeships – a viable progression pathway?’. Following this discussion, apprenticeships will be an agenda item at the next meeting in February.
