London NCOP-Linking London Update

It has been a very busy summer for the NCOP team at Linking London as we prepare for our second year of delivery.

A significant amount of time over the summer has also been spent planning for delivery in our 3 hubs. In hub 1, in addition to the sessions being delivered by our partner universities to class groups, we are launching 2 new strands of activities that are just targeted at ward learners. The first of these is a ‘FutureFest’, a programme of ‘life masterclasses’ including careers advice, talks from inspirational speakers and a number of external trips. The content of the programme has been developed in response to student feedback from our delivery last year and sessions will be delivered on a monthly basis in each college outside of curriculum time. The second strand of activity is NCOP Young Creatives, a dedicated, extra-curricular course for creative students who are interested in enterprise and entrepreneurship and who want to develop the knowledge and skills to excel as an entrepreneur. The Young Creatives programme consists of a monthly workshop between October and April with each month focusing on a different skill or knowledge area including innovation, business planning, pitching, and sources of finance. The workshops are delivered primarily by university partners and business partners who offer rich insights into running a business. Both these programmes will launch at the end of September with year 2 students.

In hub 2, London South East Colleges (LSEC) have recruited a new full-time member of staff to deliver one to one careers and guidance support with ward learners, facilitate mentoring between ward learners and current HE undergraduates in LSEC and work with university and college based higher education partners in the Linking London network to arrange NCOP events. The new member of staff will also use technology and virtual learning environment to enrol learners (Moodle). An update on this project will be provided in due course.

In hub 3, St Mary’s University, Twickenham delivered a huge number of sessions in Carshalton College, part of the South Thames Colleges Group (STCG) at the end of the last academic year and following the success of this delivery, this project is now planned to extend to South Thames College from October. This will continue to involve a mix of deploying undergraduate student mentors as classroom assistants and a series of sessions and resources on meta-cognitive and study skills delivered by Mandip Birk, the engagement officer for St Mary’s.

Lastly, the learners we are working with are tracked through the Higher Education Access Tracker (HEAT) and in August the team in the Linking London office spent time ensuring that all our activities from the 2017-2018 academic year are recorded on HEAT. We are pleased to report that in the last academic year, Linking London and our partner universities and colleges delivered a total of 255 NCOP activities to 418 learners, 112 of which are ward learners.
