London NCOP-Linking London Update

This month has been a busy and productive one for NCOP Linking London with 92 activities carried out across colleges in Hubs 1 and 2. Our total figures for this academic year now sit at 706 activities with an engagement of 238 ward learners and 601 additional learners. This is a vast improvement on our numbers compared to the same time last year and we would like to thank all those involved in coordinating and delivering these activities.

In Hub 1, our Engagement Officer at Barking and Dagenham College and Havering College of Further and Higher Education has arranged a vast array of activities including student life talks in collaboration with St Mary’s University Twickenham, careers and budgeting advice with Middlesex University London and subject specific workshops with the University of the Arts London. Students said:

“I enjoyed the session, the delivery was fantastic and I gained loads of information and advice.” (Year 2 student after Middlesex University London student life talk).

“This session gave me a better idea of what I’d like to do at university and reassured me that I would definitely like to go.” (Year 2 student after University of the Arts fashion session).

In Havering Sixth Form College, our Engagement Officer Suzanne Humphreys has held an amazing 42 one-to-one sessions with ward learners. Through spending this valuable time with students, they are able to make informed choices about their futures as the academic year comes to a close.

In Hub 2, Coulsdon Sixth Form College students have benefited from bespoke IAG sessions regarding UCAS applications and student finance. Additionally, in London South East Colleges, students have enjoyed subject specific talks in IT and Photography from Goldsmiths University London.

Looking ahead to Phase 2 of the NCOP which starts in August, we are delighted to have approved 7 projects from our partners to work on Phase 2 of the NCOP with Linking London. These projects involve 4 partner HEI’s and 4 partner Sixth Form and FE Colleges. We have also opened up for a second round of bidding if there are any partners who would still be interested in working on Phase 2 either on a project or a more ‘ad-hoc’ basis and we have specified to partners current ‘gap’ areas in terms of subject areas or student groups to enable us to have a diverse NCOP offer to students.

In terms of evaluation, Ellen Randall, the London NCOP Research & Evaluation Manager, has completed an analysis of the baseline survey results and we are currently using this to inform our planning for next year, together with the Progression Framework which has now been approved by the OfS. Students who are leaving college this year are now being asked to complete a post-survey which we will use as a comparison tool to the baseline. Lastly, Ellen is currently working on an Evaluation Framework for Phase 2 for the London NCOP which will be submitted to the OfS in July.
