Skills for Londoners Event

On the 29th November, Linking London held a Skills for Londoners event to look at the challenges and opportunities around the Mayor’s Skills Strategy for London.

After an opening welcome from our Executive Director Sue Betts, we welcomed Yolande Burgess, Strategy Director (London Councils) who provided us with a thought provoking overview of the skills needs for London.  This was followed by a presentation from Michael Heanue, Principle Policy Officer, Skills, Employment & SMEs (Greater London Authority) who gave attendees a detailed  overview of the Mayor’s Skills Strategy for London.

Following on from these two presentations attendees got together in groups to discuss any questions that came up out of the presentations and also how their own institution could or is currently engaging with the Skills Strategy for London. Attendees then discussed topics relating to the strategy such as, address the skills gap; increasing employer engagement through degree apprenticeships; work placement opportunities being made available as part of the T – level implementation; the proposal for a two year degree being offered; and the role for a renewed lifelong learning approach to improve the future skills for London.

The event closed with thanking everyone for their contributions throughout the afternoon.
