Preparing for T levels Event

On the 28th March Linking London held its second T levels event. With the first T levels being introduced in September 2020, this event focused on what we know so far about the qualification and both the opportunities and challenges ahead in terms of their implementation.

After a warm welcome from Andrew Jones, Director at Linking London, delegates heard first from Suzanne Hall, Head of Sector Development: Technical and Professional, Pearson, who provided a detailed overview of T levels, including the development phase of the Technical Qualification, timelines and a look towards wave 2 tenders.

Lisa Parkhomchuk, Associate Principal (Vocational Education), NewVIc College, then outlined the colleges involvement with the work placement pilots, lessons learned and outlined the latest news of T level funding.

After a break for refreshments and networking, attendees then heard from Judith O’Neill, Director Vocational and HE, HCUC Uxbridge College, who provided a college perspective on preparing for the first wave of T levels in 2020, including work to date as well as some of the challenges faced.

Following a group discussion the last item on the agenda gave attendees an opportunity to comment and pose questions as part of a panel Q+A session, composed of Lisa, Judith and Suzanne. Questions and comments included:

  • How do we incentivise employers to offer work placements?
  • How will FE work with schools?
  • How can universities prepare for the introduction of T levels?
  • How do we provide IAG to potential T level applicants, esp. in the absence of knowing how HEIs will respond to the qualification?
  • What about universities offering work placements?

Feedback from attendees included that another T level event at a similar time next year would be very welcome.
