The meeting featured presentations from David MacKay, Head of Stakeholder Relationships (HE), Pearson UK, Dr Dan Herbert, Academic Lead, University of Birmingham, and Sharon Perera, Academic Support Team Manager, Nicola Mottram, Education Support Manager, and Michael Downes, Academic Adviser, University of Greenwich.

The second BTEC Practitioner Group Meeting of this year took place on 28 February and was well represented with 20 FE and HE partners present.

The meeting began with a presentation from David MacKay, Pearson, who provided an update on the BTEC National qualification developments, including information from HESA data, the UCAS End of Cycle 2018 report, an update on T levels and feedback from David’s travels around HEIs to inform them about the move from QCF to RQF and general BTEC IAG.

Following this, a roundtable partner update took place where partners shared information on entry requirements and outreach offers, and college partners discussed the challenges and opportunities of offering the new and old BTEC qualification and information on supporting BTEC students transitioning to Higher Education. The group also discussed the impact of unconditional offers on BTEC students.

After a short networking break, the group heard from Dr Dan Herbert, University of Birmingham. Dan presented to the group on their HEFCE Catalyst funded Transforming Transitions project. Dan then answered questions from the group as part of a Q+A session.

Partners from the University of Greenwich then led an interactive session on their cross-university approach to inclusion - 'A Level Playing Field'.

The meeting closed with a group discussion on improving the transition of BTEC learners into and through Higher Education and priorities for the BTEC group going forward.

The next BTEC meeting will take place on 23rd May 2019, 2-5pm, Birkbeck, University of London.
