HE in FE Practitioner Group Meeting

The meeting featured presentations from David Hillier, Kingston College (South Thames Colleges Group), on TEF, Jessica Woodsford and Tom Lewis-Smith, OFFA, on the movement of OFFA into the OfS, HEFCE on the latest news in relation to HE in FE and the OfS, and Andrew Jones, Linking London, provided an update on the Linking London College HE e-prospectus and tips on how to market HE for FECs.

The second HE in FE Practitioner Group Meeting of the academic year was held on 28 February and was well attended, with 20 partner representatives present, despite adverse weather conditions.

After a very warm welcome from Sue Betts, Director of Linking London, delegates received a presentation from David Hillier, Assistant Principal - HE and Apprenticeships, Kingston College (South Thames Colleges Group), on the TEF from a college point of view. David provided an overview of the process from Year 1 to TEF Year 3, including core and split metrics, TEF outcomes and what TEF means for a college, and offered advice to colleges considering TEF.

A roundtable partner update then followed, where partners discussed and shared higher education in further education related news, mergers and HE student recruitment/retention.

Jessica Woodsford, Head of Programmes, and Tom Lewis-Smith, Policy Adviser, OFFA, then presented on the movement of OFFA into the OfS, priorities going forward and 2019-20 access and participation plans. Topics included: the new OfS regulatory framework released on 28th February, the objectives of the OfS, ambitions for access and participation and the changes colleagues should expect. Jess and Tom outlined how the movement into the OfS would specifically affect small providers and colleges.

As a HEFCE representative, unfortunately, could not make the meeting, Sue Betts, Director of Linking London, shared a presentation on behalf of HEFCE on the 2017-18 recruitment picture, the Catalyst Fund, TEF Year 3 summary and timeline, the Institutes of Technology and OfS registration.

Following this, delegates heard from Andrew Jones, Deputy Director of Linking London, on the latest updates to the Linking London College HE e-prospectus and offered attendees the opportunity to contribute to this new staff guide. Andrew also shared a presentation on how to market your HE provision.

The meeting closed with Sue Betts thanking the speakers and attendees for coming!

The last HE in FE meeting of the academic year will take place on 16th May 2018, 2 – 5pm at Birkbeck, University of London.
