Student Retention and Success Practitioner Online Meeting

On the 25th November, Linking London held the first Student Retention and Success Practitioner Online Meeting of the academic year chaired by Michael Hill, Assistant Professor in Learning & Teaching at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.

After a warm welcome from Michael Hill, the meeting began with a workshop masterclass led by Professor Liz Thomas, independent researcher and consultant for higher education and Professor of Higher Education at Edge Hill University. Liz firstly gave an introduction and the aims of this workshop including learning about using Programme Theory evaluation tools - Theory of Change and Logic Chains - to improve student retention and success. The group then split into 3 breakout groups choosing either induction and transitioning to HE; curriculum development; or personal tutoring to reflect on learning from the process and looking ahead to think about evidence. The groups then came back and gave feedback reflecting on learning from the process and looking ahead to think about evidence.

After a short comfort break, we heard from Linking London recent developments including the Educational Deprivation Dashboard and Linking London Partner’s Area.

A partner round table update then followed where our partners shared good news stories within their institution and were able express any interest in topics for future meetings, the discussion included students’  wellbeing during the pandemic, data and assessment.

The next Student Retention and Success meeting will be in the Spring term10th March 2022, 2-4:30pm.
