BTEC Practitioner Group Meeting

The meeting featured presentations from David MacKay, Head of Stakeholder Relationships (HE), Pearson UK, Julie Warner, Assistant Principal, Teaching and Learning, Havering Sixth Form College, and Andrew Jones, Director, Linking London.

The third and last BTEC Practitioner Group Meeting of this year took place on 23 May and was well represented with 20 FE and HE partners present.

The meeting began with a presentation from David MacKay, Pearson, who provided an update on the DfE consultation on the review of post-16 qualifications and commented on how Pearson will be responding.

Following this, a roundtable partner update took place where partners shared information on entry requirements and outreach offers, and college partners discussed the challenges and opportunities of offering the new and old BTEC qualification and information on supporting BTEC students transitioning to Higher Education. The group also discussed the impact of unconditional offers on BTEC students.

After a short networking break, the group heard from Julie Warner, Havering Sixth Form College, who presented to the group on how Havering Sixth Form College are delivering the new BTEC RQF qualifications. Julie discussed the challenges and hurdles they have faced, how they have overcomes these and the support they have received from Pearson.

The meeting closed with Andrew Jones, Linking London, sharing the latest mapping of HE admission requirements for BTEC applicants for 2020 entry. Andrew also led an interactive group session where delegates shared best practice for HE admissions staff for BTEC students.

The first BTEC meeting of the next academic year will take place in October at Birkbeck, University of London - date and time TBC.
