Student Retention and Success Meeting

On 21st November, Linking London held the Student Retention and Success Meeting chaired by Michael Hill, Assistant Professor in Learning & Teaching, at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. Michael also provided an overview of developments in retention and success with a particular focus on London HEIs and the group then discussed and shared best practise, issues and challenges that partners are facing.

After a warm welcome from the Chair, Michael Hill, The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, the meeting began with delegates discussing the draft terms of reference for comment and approval and gave the group a chance to make any further suggestions.

Following this Michael Hill presented on the student lifecycle, whole institution approach and the diversity of the London Landscape. Michael looked at what the key reasons of why students were leaving university in London, and how each institution is different due to factors such as mission, students, staff, resources etc. Michael also highlighted how the different approach taken by institutions, in terms of their leadership and priorities, affects recruitment and retention.

Following a short break, the group spilt into 4 groups and discussed the challenges institutions face in improving student retention and success, what the priorities and strategic approach to address these issues are and also to share any good practise.

The meeting closed with the group exploring the key priorities the group should focus on in future meetings.
