The meeting featured presentations from Pearson UK on the current BTEC developments, NewVIc College on their T levels pilot, Linking London on ‘where next for technical education?’ and the College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London on the AoC Outstanding Teaching, Learning and Assessment (OTLA) project.

The second BTEC Practitioner Group Meeting of this academic year was held on the 20th February and was well represented, with over 20 FE and HE partners present.

The meeting kicked off with a presentation from David MacKay, Head of Stakeholder Relationships (HE), who provided an update on the BTEC National qualification developments, HE requirements for QCF BTEC students, provided data on HEIs accepting BTEC students and discussed the SMF’s report on vocational qualifications

This was followed by a roundtable partner update where partners shared information on entry requirements, outreach offers, and college partners discussed the challenges and opportunities of offering the new and old BTEC specification this academic year, as well as sharing information on supporting BTEC students transitioning to Higher Education and new developments.

After a short networking break, the group heard from Torcato Coutinho, Head of Teaching and Learning, CONEL, on their AoC Outstanding Teaching, Learning and Assessment project. The aim of this project was to create a model whereby the project partnership supports industry experts (Master Technicians) with professional development for pedagogy and the industry partners exchange current vocational practice and knowledge requirements with STEM teaching practitioners.

Lisa Parkhomchuk, Associate Principal (Vocational Education), NewVIc, then shared the details of their T levels work placement pilot, including the T levels timeline, advantages and challenges of the work placement programme and the main points of discussion from the consultation event organised by the AoC on 31st January. Following this, Sue Betts, Director of Linking London, outlined Linking London’s response to the T levels consultation and discussed the impact of the new technical education pathway. Our response is available for partners if you would like a copy please email

The meeting closed with Andrew Jones, Deputy Director of Linking London, sharing Linking London’s latest data on higher and degree apprenticeship vacancies in London. At Linking London we have been tracking the number of vacancies pre and post-Levy.
