The fourth IAG Practitioner Group Meeting of the academic year was held on 20 April and was well attended with over 25 partner representatives present. After a warm welcome from Andrew Jones, Deputy Director and IAG Specialist at Linking London, delegates received an update on the current FE careers landscape and student choices from Andy Gardner, Careers Adviser and Director of Central Careers Hub. Andy discussed 25 options for students’ post-18 and informed the group of alternative routes to HE. The presentation followed with a Q&A session for partners to discuss issues with Andy.

A roundtable partner update followed, where partners discussed and shared IAG related news and examples of good practice. Topics included: UCAS applications, Summer Schools/Experience Days, college mergers and higher/degree apprenticeships.

After a short break, Michelle Craddock, Marketing Manager for Pearson Higher Education Qualifications, presented to delegates on Pearson’s Higher National Diplomas and the group discussed how they could improve the resources shared with students. The team at Pearson are creating a toolkit for students to better understand their options post-16. The group contributed their thoughts on this toolkit.

This was followed by an update on student finance from Ben Rutter, Funding Information Partners Account Manager at Student Loans Company (SLC). Ben announced to the group that finance applications are now live. The deadline for new students is 26 May and for returning students is 23 June 2017. Ben encouraged the group to inform their students to apply. Ben discussed the upcoming events at SLC including the Advanced Learner Loans seminar.

The group then heard from Andrew Jones who discussed the current higher and degree apprenticeship landscape in Greater London. Andrew provided delegates with a document that shows the latest vacancies available for higher and degree apprenticeships. Andrew informed the group about the shift in vacancies since Linking London last carried out research.

Next, partners discussed new useful IAG resources for advisers and learners and informed the group of any innovative work taking place.

The meeting closed with Andrew Jones informing the group of upcoming Linking London events and a reminder of the forthcoming Linking London publications.

The next meeting will take place on 7 June 2017, 2 – 5pm.
