HE in FE Practitioner Group Meeting

This meeting provided updates on the Higher and Degree apprenticeship developments from UVAC, Uxbridge College, Middlesex University and Linking London, and offered insight on the current higher education policy developments from HEFCE.

The second HE in FE Practitioner Group Meeting of the Academic Year was held on 2 March and was well attended, with over 25 partner representatives present. After a warm welcome from Sue Betts, Director of Linking London, delegates received an update on the current Higher and Degree apprenticeship developments from Adrian Anderson, Chief Executive of UVAC. Adrian discussed national changes in relation to the Higher and Degree apprenticeships. He told delegates about upcoming Degree apprenticeship news and the current trailblazers in operation.

Lorraine Collins, Executive Director for Enterprise and Development at Uxbridge College, then presented to the delegates on Uxbridge College’s approach to the current apprenticeship reforms. Uxbridge College supports 700 of their own apprentices and is a subcontractor for other providers.

After a short break, Darryll Bravenboer, Deputy Director of Institute of Work Based Learning at Middlesex University, informed the group of the university’s plans for the new Higher and Degree apprenticeships. Darryll told the group about the upcoming apprenticeship courses provided by the university. Middlesex intend to provide numerous Level 4 and above apprenticeship programmes.

A roundtable partner update then followed, where partners discussed and shared higher education in further education related news and plans for mergers.

This was followed by an update on policy developments from Liz Kebby-Jones, Higher Education Policy Adviser, HEFCE. Liz informed the group of the current activities happening at HEFCE at present – quality assessment process, the TEF and the Office for Students. In addition, Liz provided insight on the HEFCE catalyst fund, how to write a successful bid proposal and the current statistics of Higher apprentices in higher education institutions.

The group then heard from Andrew Jones, Deputy Director at Linking London, who discussed the current Higher and Degree apprenticeship landscape in Greater London. Andrew provided delegates with a document that shows the latest vacancies available for Higher and Degree apprenticeships.

The meeting closed with Sue Betts informing the group of an interesting event she attended, where Ewart Keep (SKOPE) spoke of the lack of employer investment in training over the past decades.

The next meeting will take place on 13 June 2017, 2 – 5pm.
