Uni Connect (NCOP) Update

June has continued to be busy for the Linking London Uni Connect programme with a focus on looking back on this academic year and using that feedback to plan for the next. We have now worked with 703 learners, 332 of which are our target ward learners. We have engaged students in more than 917 activities.

In hub 1 We have successfully recruited for our college-based Support Officer Role, the post will work across Havering FE College and Havering Sixth Form College to provide one to one support to learners. This will increase support for students within our two colleges that have the highest density of ward learners and allow more work to be facilitated. Our engagement coordinators are continuing support for learners in their final week of college before the summer break with some interest from students on late university applications.

In hub 2 our engagement officer at LSEC has been busy building an NCOP space on the LSEC website in order to integrate the programme further into the college community next academic year. This alongside offering one to one support via email and phone. At Coulsdon College our Engagement Officer has been recruiting new year 12 ward learners and has reached out to 21 students to inform them of the programme, alongside offering one to one support to students and facilitating our two online mentoring and case studies.

In Hub 3 at St Mary’s  University, our widening support lead started maternity leave in early June, her replacement has hit the ground running and been instrumental in implementing the St Mary’s subject specific online mentoring project with Student ambassadors and learners. St Marys have also been working closely with Richmond upon Thames College this side of the summer break to ensure they are firmly in place to launch projects in September, this has included taking part in progression week and at the college online induction days

Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, Ravensbourne University and Goldsmiths University will be facilitating the collaborative summer school via a blended model consisting of sending physical “art boxes” to students containing creative supplies. This resource will be accompanied by short “how-to” videos, created by student ambassadors, lecturers and creative industry experts. The videos will provide instructions and inspiration for students to use the supplies within their art boxes, alongside information on soft skills. This project is unique in that it will offer both physical and online activity. Meaning students who don’t have access to technology or internet can still gain benefits from taking part. We will be sending out 50 art boxes in early July and all available spaces are now filled with students across all three hubs.

Central team will also be creating case studies to showcase the online work going ahead and illustrate how these interventions have been useful for students during a challenging time.

Carlo Liu from Westminster Kingsway College shared how they support their students through the application process for higher and degree apprenticeships, for a more detailed review and to watch the recording click here. We continue to update our online discussion forum on Linkedin with news and updates in the sector and welcome new requests to join and get involved with the conversation here.
