HE in FE Practitioner Group Meeting

The second HE in FE Practitioner Group Meeting of the academic year chaired by David Hillier, Assistant Principal - HE and Apprenticeships, South Thames Colleges Group, was held on 14 March and was well attended represented with a variety of colleges present.

This meeting took place after Linking London's first College HE Research Group lunch meeting which featured a presentation from Donna Pike, Head of Higher Education Strategy & Development, Havering College of FE and HE on the findings from her MA dissertation ‘Is there a formula for successful Higher Education in a Further Education College?’

After a warm welcome from the Chair David Hillier, South Thames Colleges Group, delegates heard from Maureen McLaughlin, Head of Universities and Standards, QAAMaureen provided an overview of the new QAA quality code. The group then had an opportunity to ask questions and share issues as part of a Q+A session, questions included:

  • When will sampling begin?
  • What advice can you give us on the minimum staff should know about the code?
  • Is there an expectation that support and professional services staff should have involvement with the curriculum?

A roundtable partner update then followed where partners discussed and shared higher education in further education related news, mergers and HE student recruitment and OfS registration updates.

Following a networking break, Philippa O’Brien (Higher Level Skills and Vocational Industries Manager) and Sian Palmer (Marketing Team Leader), Barnet and Southgate College, presented to the group their perspective on externally marketing your college HE offer.

David Hillier then led a discussion on the latest sector news, including the delayed post 18 education and funding review, UCAS data on College HE and OfS access and participation plans/statements and registration.

The meeting closed with delegates discussing information shared at the AoC College HE Conference on 6th March and the Linking London team asking the group to get in touch with suggestions for future meetings.

The next and last HE in FE meeting of this academic year will take place on 16th May 2019, 2-5pm, at Birkbeck, University of London.
