Linking London IAG Practitioner Group Meeting
The second IAG Practitioner Group Meeting of the year was held on the 12 December 2016. After a welcome from Andrew Jones, Deputy Director, Linking London, delegates heard from Dr Michelle Stewart, Canterbury Christchurch University Careers Development Centre, who talked about recent developments in Career Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) policy and practice. In her presentation, Michelle talked about the failure of the current government to provide policy for Careers Education. In this absence, practitioners were getting on with the job of making up for the policy vacuum and Michelle gave some example of good practice happening around London. She also highlighted the good work being undertaken by London Councils and councils around London.
This was followed by an update on Higher Education Student Finance from Ben Rutter, Student Loans Company (SLC). Ben talked about some of the recent changes to student finance, such as the consultation that was soon to end on the part-time maintenance loans and post graduate loans. He also mentioned that the SLC had recently updated their website to make it easier for students to use.
Next, partners shared information at what was going on at their organisations in IAG.
This was followed by a group session which looked at what kind of data partners used to help inform their work. After the group session, Kiran Rami gave a presentation on how Uxbridge College uses data to inform CEIAG at the college. By breaking down the data in different ways, Uxbridge College use the data to target learners they know will need the most support. The data is also useful in numerous other ways, including promoting the college to learners and parents, feeding into self-assessment reports for the college, staff appraisals and partnership working with Higher Education Institutions.
To end the meeting, partners shared any useful news and resources they have found for students and advisors.
The next meeting is on the 27 February 2017, 2 - 5pm at Birkbeck, University of London.
