11 November 2022: Event Report - Friday News Round

The first Friday News Round of the academic year was held online on November 11th.

After a warm welcome from Andrew Jones, the Director of Linking London, and Jakub Kowalewski, Partnership Officer, we started off with a short quiz on recent events in the education sector.

We then updated attendees on the latest Linking London activities and resources including the list of London T Level providers, London apprenticeship provision overview, and a staff guide on College HE offer in London. We also highlighted the Linking London brokerage service. Our resources are available on the Partner Area here.

Afterwards, we outlined the current political landscape with a special emphasis on developments related to education. We covered the progression to higher education statistics, and shared UCAS updates.

Following from this, the discussion focused on the recent apprenticeship news, including some promising remarks from both King Charles and Rishi Sunak. We also touched on apprenticeship levy reform suggested by the Labour party.

Next, we went over T Level news – including feedback from Ofsted review – and mentioned BTEC updates. We summarised labour market projections, which predict a growth in the need for professional occupations.

Finally, we turned to the Office for Students, the numerical thresholds and the B3 condition, as well as the consultation on equality and opportunity in higher education.

We concluded the meeting with the likely and the less likely future policy developments to look out for.

Feedback from attendees at our first News Round event has been really positive:

“A beautifully put together first session and lots of food for thought.” University colleague

“Extremely useful! Will be attending the next one!” University colleague

“Very informative.” College colleague

The next meeting will take place on December 9th.
