Access Practitioner Group Meeting

The first Access to HE Diploma Practitioner Group meeting of the academic year was held on 10th October. The meeting featured presentations from Marisa Castellini from OCN and from Ben Rutter from Student Loans Company.

After a warm welcome from Andrew Jones Deputy Director of Linking London, delegates heard from Marisa Castellini, Head of Access to HE at OCN London. Marisa shared the latest Access and QAA updates with the group, including key outcomes in 18/19, recruitment, new progression agreements and an update on the new grading scheme.

Andrew Jones then gave a presentation on UCAS entry 2019 and the latest update on placed applicants including Nursing. Andrew provided key data on the age group and subjects of placed applicants and Nursing placed applicants.

Following this a roundtable partner update followed where partners shared information such as an upcoming HE event at Morley college and also the latest news of Morley college merging with KCC. Topics raised included new staff and student recruitment numbers.

After a short break, Ben Rutter, Funding Information Partners Account Manager from Student Loans Company  then presented on the latest HE finance developments, including advanced learner loans, student finance entitlement, part time courses and funding.

This was followed by a group activity where the group were handed some information from the UCAS website to provide a snapshot of entry requirements for both London HEIs and out of London HEIs focussing on main institutions with typically high entry requirements. In the group activity we compared these entry requirements from different institutions and then discussed with the group on what we found. Discussion included inconsistency with entry requirements, UCAS website being hard to navigate and it needing to be more open to access students.

Finally, Andrew informed the group on the recent Linking London updates, including new resources that are available, NCOP news and the Pre access collaborative support offer.

The next meeting will take place in February, dates TBC
