BTEC Practitioner Group Meeting
After a warm welcome from Andrew Jones, Director at Linking London, delegates heard first from Kate Awdry, Widening Participation Manager at the University of Bath who presented giving an overview of widening access and participation at the University of Bath including what they do already such as working with other schools, the support they give to BTEC learners and their work so far on an online/blended programme. This was followed by a group discussion on how we can support BTEC learners to “hit the ground running” where challenges were discussed such as the difficulty in getting students to consider out of London applications and more advice and guidance on entry requirements, specifically units required.
A college and university partner update then followed where partners shared information on work with BTEC learners, news updates and developments. Discussion included what going back in September might look like, online/blended learning and work experience.
After a short break, we then heard from Ria Bhatta, Head of Stakeholder Engagement at Pearson who presented to the group on the summer assessment arrangements including Q-TAGS, their work with HEIs and the appeals process.
Lastly, we had a Linking London update where Jess Brown highlighted the Higher and Degree Apprenticeship mapping in Greater London. The mapping includes the number of job postings and by specialism. Andrew Jones then shared some mapping of HE admissions requirements for BTEC applicants for 2022 entry including looking at poor and good practice.
The next BTEC Practitioner Group Meeting will be in October, time and date to be confirmed.
