London NCOP-Linking London Update

March has been a very successful month for us, with over 75 activities taking place in Hubs 1 and 2 engaging over 50 ward learners.

Our most ward learner dense year 1 classes in Barking and Dagenham College and Havering FE College have benefited from Intro to NCOP sessions this month, through this alone we have reached 27 ward learners. This has also been an opportunity for us to learn what learners want to get out of the programme and thus use this feedback as a springboard to plan a diverse and innovative range of activities for the students with a focus on their subject. Our programme officer also delivered a number of student finance sessions throughout Hub 1 as student finance is now open and ensuring that students progressing onto HE understand finance is imperative.

Also in Hub 1, at Havering Sixth Form College planning for a sports careers day is underway; addressing the need for careers and HE advice in guidance in one of our most ward learner heavy subject areas. Along with Coulsdon College, Havering Sixth Form College students also had the pleasure of attending theatre production ‘The Life’ at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.

In Hub 2, London South East Colleges have been working in collaboration with St Mary’s University London to delivery study skills sessions; equipping students with practical skills in order to raise attainment. Sessions so far have focused on time management, organisation and note taking. Sessions have received high praise and we have also taken on board requests for future session content from students.

Planning has continued for Phase 2 of the NCOP. On 12th March we held a very successful open meeting for HEI and college partners to come together and begin the collaborative process for projects in Phase 2 and partners have until Friday 26th April to submit a bid. At the open meeting, we also showcased our latest good news report, this time in the form of a video, which has also been shared with the CFE and received positive feedback.  Progression framework planning is well underway too. We have also been meeting regularly with Access HE and Aimhigher London who together with Linking London make up the London NCOP to discuss the format of the outreach hub for the London NCOP which along with targeted outreach, makes up the second strand of the NCOP work in Phase 2.
