London NCOP-Linking London Update

Over the summer, Linking London NCOP has organised a variety of exciting experiences for our learners. In July, we held two extremely successful summer schools. “Yes You Can” was created in collaboration with our partner the University of East London and well attended by our partner colleges in Hub 1. Students had the fantastic experience of staying overnight on campus in halls of residence and attending an assortment of activities such as confidence building, debating, a UCAS fair and even an escape room to exercise their skills in team work.

Creative Summer School

July also saw the reprise of our collaborative creative summer school in partnership with the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, Ravensbourne University London and Goldsmiths University London. Students from Havering College of Further and Higher Education, Barking and Dagenham College and Havering Sixth Form College had the amazing experience of visiting three universities for a brilliantly diverse range of activities. Students visited Body Worlds London, a musical at the Apollo Theatre, the Goldsmiths Centre for Contemporary Art and enjoyed workshops in art, design and music. We created two videos documenting the summer schools which can be found here: https://youtu.be/CNNHDXFredM  (collaborative summer school) https://youtu.be/MqtfXtXm_ZQ (University of East London).

Additionally, we have been spending the summer planning delivery timelines for all our partner colleges and the university projects which will be working in them. So far, we are pleased to announce that we have approved 8 projects for this academic year. Our third round of bidding closes September 20th 2019 so there may be some more projects yet to come. We have also spent our time creating useful resources for Engagement Officers such as the ops guide and HE guide. Phase 2 officially began on August 1st and we are looking forward to a productive academic year with activities for students kicking off in September.

In a new development for phase 2 of the NCOP, which started on the 1st of August, the London NCOP consortium has been tasked with setting up a London Outreach Hub. The London NCOP, consisting of Linking London, AccessHE, Aimhigher London and our lead institution Kingston University London, are working together to develop a London Outreach Hub offer which will include a website aimed at staff in London schools and colleges , focusing on teachers and advisers. The website, which will be operational later this term, will signpost to outreach activities in London and trusted sources of information,  as well as act as a point of contact for further information and support.  In addition, the three consortia are in the process of recruiting hub staff to provide direct support to schools and colleges in areas of low participation. AccessHE and Aimhigher London will be working with targeted schools and Linking London will be focussing its support on London sixth form and further education colleges.  More detailed information on the work of the London NCOP Outreach Hub and Linking London’s work to support London colleges will be made available in the near future.
