Gender, Lifelong Learning and Social Class (GLAS)
In 2011, Linking London, hosted by Birkbeck, University of London, was successful in securing co-funding from the flagship European funding programme in the field of education and training, the Lifelong Learning Programme (under the sectorial sub programme Erasmus for Higher Education).
The project entitled 'Social class, gender, participation and lifelong learning' (GLAS) officially started on the 1st October 2011, platforming the HEFCE initiative of Lifelong Learning Networks in Europe by comparing, developing and disseminating best available practice in supporting the social inclusion and progression of working class individuals and, in particular women, in lifelong learning.
The project operated through planned transnational staff mobilities and a web-based e-forum, with partners in the Netherlands, Spain and Portugal. The work concentrated around examining the six core themes below:
- Use of APEL/APL
- Work based learning
- Continuing professional development
- Social mobility
- Community and civic engagement
- Widening participation
This was a great opportunity to demonstrate an innovative sustainability strategy for LLNs and raise Birkbeck, Linking London’s and HEFCE’s profile with the area of Lifelong Learning and social mobility across Europe.
