Following a successful student retention and success event last academic year we are pleased to announce that we are now running a practitioner group to explore retention and success themes in more detail. The group will meet three times per year and will provide an opportunity, for our partner colleagues who are involved in heading up retention and success in their institutions to discuss priority groups, issues and challenges with their student body, the role of OfS and share strategies that address these key stages of the student journey. We would also like to explore the role of students and how institutions are engaging with their student body to develop programmes and support which meets particular needs and improves overall student experience. The group will also consider how Linking London can support partners in this area and we will discuss ways we can work collaboratively in the future. As the group develops and progresses we are keen to take on board attendees interests and concerns in this area to shape the group and ensure it meets our partner’s needs.

The meetings will be Chaired by Michael Hill, Assistant Professor in Learning & Teaching at The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, FACE Secretary and Educational Consultant. Michael brings to this group a wealth of knowledge in the whole student life cycle and will share with us his experience and research in this area.

In our first meeting, on Thursday 21st November 2pm-5pm, as well as setting the scene and context for this group we will be looking at some of the key priority groups which have been identified and included in Access and Participation Plans for London Higher Education providers. We will then have a Chatham House Rule discussion where you will be able to share your own institutions priorities and strategies you have or plan to adopt to approach them.  Followed by looking at the challenges and issues we face going forward to continue to improve outcomes for students.

The group is open to all staff groups within our partnership although we would particularly encourage those who have a strategic responsibility for retention and success, are involved in student support, teaching and learning staff as well and Widening Participation staff. However, anyone with an interest in retention and success is welcome to attend.
