The first BTEC Practitioner Group meeting of this academic year will include an update on BTEC developments as well as the latest news on government's plans for technical education from David MacKay, Head of Awarding Body Stakeholder Engagement, Pearson.

The meeting will also focus on showcasing innovative practice in supporting BTEC student achievement and making the transition into and through Higher Education:

  • Jamie Gillooly, Programme Manager for Computer Science and IT and Senior Tutor Vocational Education at NewVIc, will be presenting on their innovative Computer Science partnership with London South Bank University. Jamie has helped to establish the partnership whereby LSBU deliver units of the BTEC level 3 IT qualification to NewVIc students at the university. He will also be sharing his thoughts on lessons learnt in partnership building between colleges and universities and how to make them a success.

  • Representatives from the University of Sheffield will also be attending to provide an overview of their Alternative Qualifications Project, which focuses on providing comprehensive support for BTEC students that they recruit into and through their undergraduate studies.

After a round table update, which will provide attendees with an opportunity to share news, issues and good practice, there will be further updates on Linking London’s mapping of HE entry requirements for BTEC applicants for 2018 entry and on the latest higher and degree apprenticeship opportunities for college leavers.

This meeting is aimed at HE and FE academic and admissions staff, careers advisers and widening participation staff and those with a responsibility for induction, retention and success. However, anyone with an interest in BTEC learners and progression to HE is also welcome to attend.
